The collet aligning screw is broken off, i plan to replace it. When i slammed the R8 collet in the spindle it didn't go all the way in. I measured the distance from the shoulder inside the spindle to the end of the spindle, compared to the R8, it was shorter by 1-1/8". I had the R8 prior to the mill. There is no insert in the spindle.

This is the nut from one of the quarter turn quick-change systems made by Erickson. It is for a 40 taper. The threads are in good shape and the insert turns by finger. Almost no spanner marks (so it was probably always hand tightenable) and I can't see that it has ever been scrubbed.
