This is exactly how telescope mirrors are made by hand. The mirror is on top and the equal sized tool is on the bottom. Work continues with a coarse abrasive until the mirror has the proper radius. Then the mirror and tool are periodically exchanged while grinding (lapping) with successively finer grades of abrasive.
