Ball Nose Milling Strategy Guide - In The Loupe

Ball Nose Milling Without a Tilt Angle. Ball nose end mills are ideal for machining 3-dimensional contour shapes typically found in the mold and die industry, the manufacturing of turbine blades, and fulfilling general part radius requirements. To properly employ a ball nose end mill (with no tilt angle) and gain the optimal tool life and part finish, follow the 2-step process below (see Figure 1).

The calculated speed is 2,064 RPM and the linear feed is 8.3 IPM. The thread diameter of a 9/16 thread is .562", which is used for the inner and outer diameter in both adjustments. After plugging these values into the equations below, the adjusted internal feed becomes 2.8 IMP, while the external feed becomes 13.8 IPM.

Instead, any milling process run at around 15,000 rpm or higher is likely to offer some optimum spindle speed, a "sweet spot," where the cut is significantly more stable than it is at both higher and lower speed settings. This sweet spot rpm value may permit double the depth of cut compared to other speeds. It may permit triple the depth of cut.

Cutting speed. Cutting speed may be defined as the rate at the workpiece surface, irrespective of the machining operation used. A cutting speed for mild steel of 100 ft/min is the same whether it is the speed of the cutter passing over the workpiece, such as in a turning operation, or the speed of the cutter moving past a workpiece, such as in a milling operation.

A lot of times you can use the same feedrate in IPM, and simply increase RPM somewhat for light finish cuts. My take on it? If you're doing heavy cutting - slots at 1/4 the depth of the end mill diameter at a time, or side milling say 1xD deep and 10% wide, start in the middle for FPT and low end for RPM. Increase from there. Lighter cutting?
