In the Bayer process (Fig. 2), bauxite received from the mines is crushed to a particle size of less than 25 mm, usually by a hammer mill, blended to obtain a more uniform feed for the process, and stored. From storage the bauxite is metered into wet grinding-rod mills, where spent liquor (recycled NaOH solution) is used as a grinding medium.
