If direct drive.... well, don't matter if direct drive or pulley drive. Look at the rpm of the drive wheel. Using a 4" drive wheel your belt speed will be slightly above the rpm of drive wheel. i.e. - 1800 rpm motor with 4" drive wheel will have around a 1900 SFPM belt speed. The larger the drive wheel, the faster the belt speed at same rpm.

Direct drive is the ONLY way to go WITH a VFD of course. If budget isn't an option then the NEMA 4X enclosure, otherwise a cheap Chinese VFD that are so easy to setup. With filters over air inlets they last for many years. For $70 or so even if they only lasted 4 or 5 yrs would still be cheap. The KMG has been a good basic grinder for many years.

I'm collecting parts and planning to build myself a KMG-clone style belt grinder. I've read several places that the best way to keep your sanding belt on their respective pulleys is to put a crown on the drive and/or idler pulley. For those of you with a CNC lathe this might be easy but for a guy with a manual lathe its a bit harder to do.
